I’ve been working through tight muscles since January 2025. My stiff muscles showed up from the stress of caring for my parents. After they died, I committed to stretching them out.
A few months ago, I had an ah-ha moment: I need to be more intentional about how I use my muscles when I get up from the chair. Each time I got up, I considered how that could be like a squat. These semi-squats started to help ease my tightness because, I learned, squats improve flexibility. The pain from my tense muscles is now easing. The squatting actually helps more than my daily stretching.
So now I’m doing what I can to add in more opportunities to squat.
These small opportunities feel like a major win.
We all have these kinds of small chances for improvement. To remind us to be aware of these fortuitous minutes, let’s begin our day with this question: “What’s today’s small opportunity?”
This question can prompt us to:
create a five-minute habit that helps us mentally or physically
ask for what we need when we realize we’re in the right moment to make the request
spend some time in a different way so we feel like we make good use of our time.
What’s a small opportunity for you today?
