The Caregiving Years Training Academy — Complete Guide
How to Start a Caregiving Coaching Business
Everything you need to know — from discovering your readiness to launching a sustainable, meaningful practice that serves family caregivers.
Section 01
The Caregiving Coaching Opportunity
There has never been a better time to start a caregiving coaching business. The numbers tell a clear story: more than 100 million Americans are currently providing unpaid care for a family member, and nearly six in ten U.S. adults expect to take on caregiving responsibilities in the future. Despite that staggering demand, 87.9% of family caregivers cannot identify a single company that stands out in helping them.
That gap — between the number of people who need support and the number of professionals trained to provide it — is exactly where a caregiving coaching business lives.
Family caregivers are desperately searching for a professional who understands their experience and commits to supporting them. That person can be you.
— Denise M. Brown, Founder, The Caregiving Years Training AcademyA caregiving coach is not a home care aide. You are not there to provide hands-on physical care. You are the strategist, the listener, the expert, and the guide — the professional who helps family caregivers navigate one of the most complex and emotionally demanding experiences of their lives.
The business model is accessible. You can build a caregiving coaching practice while working another job. You can serve clients virtually or in person. You can work with individual families, employers, healthcare organizations, faith communities, or all of the above. And as of 2024, Medicare has opened reimbursement pathways for peer support specialists and care navigators — a recognition that this work is essential healthcare.
A Career with Real Revenue Potential
A coaching practice serving ten individual clients and ten group coaching participants, plus one workshop or corporate engagement per month, can generate more than $54,000 per year. For many caregiving coaches, this starts as a side practice and grows into a full-time business. For others, it remains a meaningful and profitable part-time endeavor that complements an existing career in healthcare, social work, counseling, or other helping professions.

5 Signs You're Ready to Launch
After training caregiving coaches for more than a decade, Denise Brown has identified five key signs that indicate you're positioned for success. You don't need all five — but if you recognize three or more, it may be time to take action.
You Regularly Share Resources — Because People Keep Asking
People naturally turn to you when navigating caregiving challenges. You're the one in the support group who offers practical guidance. You find yourself energized, not drained, when helping others through caregiving decisions.
Your Own Caregiving Journey Has Transformed You
You're not the same person you were before your caregiving experience. You've done enough inner work that your experience is now a source of wisdom rather than raw pain — and you want to help others find the same transformation.
You're Frustrated by the Lack of Real Support Available
You've experienced the gaps firsthand: providers who don't communicate, support groups that don't give real solutions, resources that are either too clinical or too simplistic. And you've moved from frustration to envisioning something better.
You Have the Capacity (Or Can Create It) for This Work
You don't need perfect circumstances — you need good-enough circumstances and the willingness to be strategic. If you can dedicate 16 hours per week and have some financial stability during the launch phase, you have what you need to begin.
You Feel a Deep Sense of Calling — Even If You're Scared
This is the hardest to measure but the most important. It's the persistent pull that won't let you go. The fear of not trying feels worse than the fear of failing. That's the sign that matters most.

What Family Caregivers Actually Need
Understanding the real needs of family caregivers is the foundation of an effective coaching practice. When caregivers describe what would help them most, five themes emerge consistently.
Someone who hears them, validates their experience, and creates safe space for emotions they're rarely given permission to express.
A brainstormer and problem-solver who helps them develop clear, actionable plans for the complex decisions caregiving requires every day.
Someone well-informed about caregiving who speaks their language and understands their lived experience — not just the clinical side.
Someone who can be present during painful moments, celebrate small victories, and provide compassionate, judgment-free guidance.
Someone who helps them see they can do this — who gives them clarity, helps them make decisions, and prepares them for what comes next.
These words from real family caregivers capture the depth of what's missing. There is no shortage of demand. What's missing are trained, informed, compassionate professionals who understand the caregiving experience from the inside — and who have the tools to help.

The Six Commitments of a Successful Caregiving Coach
Through years of training caregiving coaches, Denise Brown identified six commitments that distinguish coaches who build sustainable practices from those who don't. These aren't aspirational values — they're the practical foundation of a functioning business.
Commitment
Learning, training, and delivering the best possible experience to your clients. Your lived experience is the foundation — professional training expands what you can offer.

Your 5-Month Blueprint to Launch
One of the most common questions aspiring caregiving coaches ask is: how long does this take? The answer, for most people who commit fully, is five months from decision to active practice. Here is what that journey looks like.
Enroll in Training & Begin Your Foundation
Enroll in the Certified Caregiving Consultant program and, optionally, the Workshop Creator Program. Begin your self-paced modules, attend your first Study Hall, and start absorbing the Six Caregiving Stages framework that anchors everything.
Begin Pro Bono Consulting & Develop Your Marketing Tools
Start working with your first clients — often at no charge — to build confidence and complete your certification hours. Simultaneously, develop your website, messaging, and the core marketing materials that tell your story.
Build Referrals & Secure Your Business Infrastructure
Begin reaching out to referral sources: healthcare providers, social workers, faith communities, and employers. Complete your certification requirements and secure Errors & Omissions insurance to practice professionally.
Host Lead-Generating Workshops & Schedule Paid Consultations
Deliver your first workshop — a powerful way to attract ideal clients and establish your authority in your community. Begin transitioning clients from complimentary to paid engagements and fill your first coaching cohorts.
Repeat, Refine & Grow — You Are Now a Certified Caregiving Consultant
You have completed your certification, served your first clients, built your referral network, and delivered your first workshops. Now you refine what's working, deepen your relationships, and grow a practice that sustains both you and the families you serve.
A Realistic Monthly Revenue Model
This is a conservative model. Many Certified Caregiving Consultants charge more per session as they build their reputation and specialized expertise. Coaches who serve employers, health systems, or other organizations typically command significantly higher fees.

Getting Certified: The Certified Caregiving Consultant Program
The Certified Caregiving Consultant (CCC) credential is the foundation of a professional caregiving coaching practice. At 110 hours of training, it is the most comprehensive program of its kind — built on Denise Brown's proprietary frameworks developed over 30 years of working with family caregivers.
The program is organized around nine training modules, delivered through weekly Study Halls over nine weeks. You complete self-paced coursework alongside live, facilitated sessions with fellow students — a structure that builds both expertise and community.
The CCC program is available at three levels depending on your goals and experience:
CCC Bronze
The core foundation: frameworks, communication techniques, and tools to begin working with family caregivers.
CCC Silver
Expanded training for coaches who want deeper expertise in specialized caregiving situations and client populations.
CCC Gold
The comprehensive credential for coaches building full practices or serving healthcare organizations and employers.
What the CCC Program Teaches
The Six Caregiving Stages framework — developed by Denise Brown in 1997 and refined over nearly three decades — gives you a map of the entire caregiving journey. You will also learn the 19 Caregiving Systems, the 12 Caregiving Fatigues, and specific communication techniques for working with clients who are often navigating the hardest experiences of their lives.
Graduates also gain access to six planning tools, conversational assessments, and group coaching programs — the infrastructure you need to begin serving clients immediately after certification.
Medicare Reimbursement: An Expanding Opportunity
In 2024, Medicare finalized reimbursement for Community Health Integration, SDOH Risk Assessment, and Principal Illness Navigation services — creating a direct pathway for Certified Caregiving Consultants to be compensated through healthcare systems as peer support specialists and care navigators. The CCC program meets the training and certification requirements for this role.
