How Can I Hear and Be Heard?

We may know so many struggling right now. We may be in our own awful struggle.

During a struggle, we can feel lost about what could help—for ourselves or others.

Often, we best help another by simply listening to them share their struggles. When we sit and truly listen, we give good company. That kind of presence brings relief.

When life feels really hard for us, we may feel disconnected from others who just can’t bear our suffering. When another sits and listens to us, we receive comfort that eases our heartache.

Listening requires just our time, attention and presence. We don’t need to purchase supplies or secure resources. We just need to sit with another.

We can hear another’s pain and lessen their loneliness. When another shares their struggle with us, we show we care by being a good listener.

We can be heard and receive the comfort we need. When we feel alone, we can ask another to simply sit with us and listen.

We can remember that listening matters by asking ourselves this question to start our day: “How can I hear and be heard?”

In your life, who needs to be heard? Who can hear you?
